Description

If you haven't seen Inside Out yet, I really don't know what to say to you.

I'm not kidding when I say that this is officially my favorite Pixar movie. Possibly even my favorite Disney movie. Everything about it is perfect, from its characters to its plot to the execution of its plot to the incredible ways they visualize the emotional processes of the mind. It's everything I wanted it to be and more.

Of course it was only a matter of time before I made fan art of it. I love the interactions between Joy and Sadness because, putting it simply, you just can't have one without the other, and I mean in reality. Sadness is a vital coping mechanism, and without the sad times, how could you identify happy times? You can't have the good without the bad. Likewise, Sadness is there to help you through tough situations, and Joy is there to pick you up out of them. The movie does a fantastic job of explaining why both of these feelings are important, showing their duality as well as how they work together.

At first I considered drawing this either in my traditional style or as a painting, but then I decided to try something different. One ingenious character design on the emotions is how you can clearly see the particles they are made of, so I fiddled around with the more grainy-looking brushes for the outlines and burn/dodge tools. For an experiment in style, I'm actually quite pleased with how this turned out. ^-^

So there you have it! Joy and Sadness, a duo as old as time.

But seriously, Best Animated Feature Film winner for sure.
